The NetHabilis PhoneHome™ story
NetHabilis PhoneHome™ was created in response to a real business problem faced by mobile phone retailers in the late 2000s. At that time, devices in stores were frequently targeted for theft, resulting in significant financial losses for their owners.
In 2009, we started developing a groundbreaking solution for the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.x platform, with the goal of allowing stolen devices to maintain a secret line of communication with their rightful owner. The basic idea was that a device, even after being stolen, could continue to send critical information via specially coded SMS messages.
In March 2010, the development of NetHabilis PhoneHome™ was completed and its installation on retail business devices began. The solution provided GPS tracking, SIM card change notification, call and SMS data collection, and Bluetooth proximity tracking capabilities.
The effectiveness of the system was quickly proven in practice. PhoneHome™ contributed to the recovery of stolen devices in at least two separate incidents, providing information that helped owners locate their devices and immediately take action to recover them a few hours after they were stolen. In an era before the widespread use of modern Mobile Device Management (MDM) and cloud tracking services, the ability of a device to “return information home” was a significant technological innovation.
